Manchester United have completed the signing of Chilean superstar, Alexis Sanchez on a four-and-a-half-year contract from Arsenal with Henrikh Mkhitaryan moving the opposite direction. The transfer of the former Barcelona man to Old Trafford has been one that has been shocking given that he looked nailed-on to join Manchester City.
The 29-year-old has moved to Old Trafford with no transfer fee, as the swap deal involving him and Mkhitaryan was straight without any fee.
City looked to have secured the signing of the player for around £20m, but Manchester United stole a march on them by offering him bigger wages. The prospect of Mkhitaryan joining Arsenal also helped sway the minds of the Arsenal hierarchy. Sanchez is set to earn a mammoth £350,000 per week.
Speaking after signing the deal, Sanchez said, am joining the biggest club in the world,” “I have spent three-and-a-half wonderful years at Arsenal and I bring with me very positive memories of that great club and its fans.
“The chance to play in this historic stadium and to work with Jose Mourinho was something I could not turn down. I am very proud to be the first Chilean player ever to play for United’s first team and I hope I can show our fans all around the world why the club wanted to bring me here.”.
The diminutive forward had never hidden his intention to leave Arsenal as he had refused a contract extension and allowed his deal to run down to its final six months. Sanchez will wear the famous United no 7 jersey, joining a list of club legends such as George Best, Cantona, Beckham and Ronaldo to have worn the famed number.“ I Sanchez is one of the best players in the world that will add more quality to Jose Mourinho’s team, who are still in the running to win the Champions League and FA Cup.
